When I said prioritize, what I really meant is pick the room you want to start working on. Even if you want to do the whole house at once, it is not practical and it can be overwhelming. So, pick the room you want to start in and go from there. Immerse yourself in design shows and design magazines until you find the look you want. It does not matter if you have the designer touch, copy the look that you like from a magazine and start there. Lets say for example that you want to redo your master bedroom and you need new furniture. What to do?
Find your style and decide what pieces you will need to complete your look.
1) Check out ebay,Craigslist and your local newspaper for good quality used furniture
2) Check out garage sales, estate sales and auctions
3) Familiarize yourself with the clearance sections at your local furniture stores and watch for big sales
4) Check out the local home improvement store for ideas to make a headboard or other pieces
There are some pieces you may need to buy new and splurge on, but when you consider the whole project, you will save significant money. Now as for bedding, I always choose new. I like the crisp look of a new bedding set. So for that, I would search for deals. I found a gorgeous 24 piece king bed set at Macys for 60% off and free shipping. The total cost is $180 but you are talking the sheets, the comforter, the decorator pillows, four curtain panels and valances. You could spend $180 just on the window treatments. Those are the kind of deals you want to look for. Hopefully you bought some paint with the Home Depot deal a few weeks back, but if not watch for the sales. Get some good quality paint. Who knows, Home Depot may still have the Ralph Lauren paints available. They are all clearanced so even without a rebate they are a fantastic deal. If all you can do is paint the room this month, paint the room. Not sure of the paint color? Go to your local home improvement store and pick up the flyers in the paint department. Pick out the samples that stand out to you and bring them home. Take a few days and decide what works for you.
